Twenty20 is a form of cricket, originally introduced in the United Kingdom for professional inter-county competition by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), in 2003. A Twenty20 game involves two teams, each have a single innings, batting for a maximum of 20 overs.

A Twenty20 game is completed in about two and half hours, with each innings lasting around 75 minutes, thus bringing the game closer to the timespan of other popular team sports such as football. It was introduced to create a lively form of the game which would be attractive to spectators at the ground and viewers on television and as such it has been very successful. The ECB did not intend that Twenty20 would replace other forms of cricket and these have continued alongside it.

Since its inception the game has spread around the cricket world. On most international tours there is a Twenty20 match and most Test-playing nations have a domestic cup competition. The inaugural World Twenty20 was played in South Africa in 2007 with India defeating Pakistan in the final. The Indian Premier League is currently the largest and most popular (in terms of attendance and television audience) Twenty20 league in the world.

General Rules:

The Laws of cricket apply to Twenty20, with some exceptions:

* Each bowler may bowl a maximum of only one-fifth of the total overs per innings (generally four, for a full, uninterrupted game). i.e., 4 in the 20 overs

* Should a bowler deliver a no ball by overstepping the popping crease, it costs 1 run and his next delivery is designated a "free-hit", from which the batsman can only be dismissed through a run out, as is the case for the original "no ball". (Strictly speaking, the very rare methods of dismissal from a "no ball" -- for hitting the ball twice, obstructing the field or handling the ball -- also apply to the "free-hit" delivery.)

* Umpires may award five-run penalty runs at their discretion if they believe either team is wasting time.

* The following fielding restrictions apply:
o No more than five fielders can be on the leg side at any time.
o During the first six overs, a maximum of two fielders can be outside the 30-yard circle.
o After the first six overs, a maximum of five fielders can be outside the fielding circle.

* If the fielding team doesn't start to bowl their 20th over within 75 minutes, the batting side is credited an extra six runs for every whole over bowled after the 75 minute mark; the umpire may add more time to this if they believe the batting team is wasting time.

Muttiah Muralitharan has become the highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals, going past Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram's haul of 502 wickets, in the fourth ODI against India in Colombo. Murali started his 328th match level with Akram and dismissed Gautam Gambhir in his 10th over for the record.
Murali, 36, is also the highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 769 wickets in 125 matches. The last person to simultaneously hold the record for most Test and ODI wickets was the former Indian captain Kapil Dev.
The record came with his 17650th legal delivery. Murali floated the ball outside off stump to induce a thin edge from Gambhir. He turned around to look at his old team-mate Kumar Dharmasena, now an umpire, who raised his finger. Muralitharan then jogged towards the catcher Kumar Sangakkara, who patted him on his back before enveloping him with a hug. The rest of the Sri Lankans joined in the huddle but the celebration was muted.
Murali dedicated the record to his family for their constant encouragement. "They are great supporters of mine, and have stood by me through the bad times and the good." He also said the feat was a great achievement for Sri Lanka "because we are not a great cricket-playing nation, we are a smaller nation compared to others".
Akram, the man whose record was broken, led the tributes to Murali." I noticed his progress in 2003 and realised he was the only man who could break my record," he told AFP. "At times I jokingly told him not to play one-day cricket, so that my record would remain intact, but he is relentless in taking wickets. I am happy that a bowler of his calibre has broken my record.
"No matter what type of surface he has played on, no matter in which country, and against which team ... he is simply great and more than a good bowler, he is a good human being.

Watch India vs Srilanka Highlights 4th ODI Colombo 2009

gambir
Watch video highlights of Ind vs sl, 4th odi to be played at colombo 2009. India allready up in the series is 3-0 will be looking to give rest to some players and might ask to play some juniors.
ndia marched to their longest winning streak - nine matches - with a comprehensive win that pushed Sri Lanka further towards their first 5-0 ODI whitewash. The victory was built around Gautam Gambhir's personal best and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 94 at No. 3, innings that helped set Sri Lanka a target of 333, 62 more than the highest-ever chased at the Premadasa Stadium. Sri Lanka hit the ground running at the start of their chase but Praveen Kumar and Pragyan Ojha eventually choked off the run supply.
The toss was won yet again by Dhoni, his ninth success in ten games against Sri Lanka, and it proved crucial as Ojha and the part-timers looked more effective under lights than even Muttiah Muralitharan did in the first half of the match. Murali did break the record for the most wickets in ODIs but his landmark victim, Gambhir, had scored 150 by then.
The toss was not the only correct call Dhoni made today. He promoted himself to No. 3 for the first time as captain after the early dismissal of Virender Sehwag. The last time he went in at No. 3, against Bangladesh, Dhoni had added 87 with Gambhir, who scored his second ODI century. Dhoni missed a hundred today after adding 188 with Gambhir, but maintained his superlative record at one-drop. Gambhir went on to make the highest individual score in Sri Lanka.
The total of 332 was achieved only after a difficult start. The pitch at the R Premadasa offered some movement with the new ball and Farveez Maharoof and Nuwan Kulasekara troubled the openers.
After Sehwag's fall - to a sharp catch by Sanath Jayasuriya at mid-off that was about the only moment of inspiration in the field - Gambhir and Dhoni were not given easy offerings. India hit only five boundaries in the first 14 overs and Gambhir had to step out and loft to break the shackles.
In the absence of boundaries, Gambhir and Dhoni ran with ferocity and the kind of understanding that Gambhir and Sehwag demonstrate. The Sri Lankan fielding wilted under the pressure, managing three misfields, not backing up well twice, and allowing too many twos in the outfield. The batsmen were alert to every opportunity, even running overthrows to ricochets off the stumps. Between them, Dhoni and Gambhir took 25 twos and five threes. Dhoni and Gambhir stepped up the pace when Mahela Jayawardene turned to his fourth and fifth bowlers. In back-to-back overs, Gambhir hit Angelo Mathews for a six to bring up his half-century and Dhoni treated Muttiah Muralitharan similarly to reach his. Dhoni looked for another higher gear but top-edged Jayasuriya to short third man when he was six short of his century.
Following the loss of three quick wickets, Gambhir switched from steady accumulator to ruthless hitter. He was on 87 off 98 balls when Yusuf got out, but scored 63 off the next 49. Along with Gambhir, Suresh Raina kept finding the gaps and India scored 97 in the last 12 overs.
Facing a daunting target, Sri Lanka's best chance was for Tillakaratne Dilshan and Jayasuriya to take on India's new-ball attack of Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan. They got off to a blazing start but the weight of the required run-rate was too much and both batsmen fell trying to manufacture shots. Kumar Sangakkara scored an impressive half-century but with wickets falling at the other end, he did not have it easy.

The Big Picture
How do lift your side less than two days after their worst-ever home defeat - that too for a dead rubber? That's what Mahela Jayawardene has to figure out ahead of the fourth one-dayer at the R Premadasa Stadium. Of particular concern is their bowling, which was toothless against the rampaging Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag on Tuesday. Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis were handled with ease and even the usually accurate Farveez Maharoof leaked runs. The fielding has been below par as well, grassing chances on a regular basis, and the batting is inconsistent.

Sri Lanka's ODI record against major teams since the 2007 World Cup makes for sorry reading - the Asia Cup triumph and the recent win against a turmoil-ridden Pakistan are outweighed by home losses to India (twice) and England, the poor show at last year's CB series, and defeat in the Caribbean.

India, on the other hand, have little to worry about; even their spinners, who hadn't been among the wickets till the third game, are firing. Another victory will help them break the record for most wins on the trot by an Indian side in ODIs but Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said the focus is more on testing the bench strength.

Watch out for ...
Tillakaratne Dilshan hasn't shown the explosive form that propelled Sri Lanka to their come-from-behind series win in Pakistan. India got a taste of how dangerous he could be during his cameo on Tuesday, when he walked down the track to take on the quick bowlers.

Praveen Kumar may not come out on top when bowling speeds are measured but he has the priceless ability to swing the new ball both ways on most surfaces. That allows him to make crucial early breakthroughs - Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist early in both finals of last year's CB series, and Sanath Jayasuriya with his first ball on Tuesday.

Teams

With the series in the bag, India are looking to experiment. That could be good news for Irfan Pathan and Rohit Sharma. With a packed schedule ahead, at least one of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma is likely to be rested. India haven't yet announced their XII though.

India: (from) Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), Yusuf Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan

Chamara Kapugedera's lean trot continued with his low score on Tuesday but he is likely to retain his spot - his appointment as vice-captain for the Twenty20 side shows how highly the selectors rate him. One change they could make is bringing in either allrounder Angelo Mathews or Jehan Mubarak for Dilhara Fernando to bolster the batting.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7, Angelo Mathews, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Pitch and conditions
The pitches in the two games so far at the Premadasa have been totally different. While the first one stayed more or less the same through the match, the one used for the second game was a batting paradise in the first half but offered the spinners alarming turn and bounce during the Sri Lankan chase.

Quotes
"We are not looking at the record. Rather, we will give chance to players who didn't get a chance to play in the series so far."
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is clear on what his priorities are for the remainder of the series

"We need our best team to win the next two matches, which is very important to get back the confidence."
Mahela Jayawardene knows that unlike India, Sri Lanka don't have the luxury of experimenting

9.50am The boom-box speakers are already working overtime blasting out the tunes, but those spectators who are in are in a more sedate mood at the moment. Give it a few hours, though.

Nasser Hussain pitchside: "It's almost like a subcontinent pitch without the usual sheen and shine you expect here. It doesn't look fast and bouncy, almost like the kind of pitch you'd expect in India and it will take turn later on." He fancies the skiddy West Indies bowlers will be a problem for the batsmen.

Still time to enter our Fantasy game for the series. And if that's up your street, check out scrum.com's Six Nations Fantasy … that competition kicks off in the snow with England v Italy on Saturday.

9.45am "Picture perfect day in Kingston, clear blue sky although there is a hint in the forecast that there may be a few showers later in the game," advises Andrew McGlashan from the boundary edge. "Paltry crowd so far, mainly made up of England supporters."

"Owais Shah should come and join Pakistan," emails Faisal. "We don't play much Test cricket either."

9.40am Bell is a "very, very lucky lad indeed," chunters Bob Willis. Our feedbackers are not being quite so polite. The thing is that by playing Bell they have almost certainly decided to play him for at least two or three Tests out here. So Shah again appears to have a lot of sitting around ahead of him.

9.30am Andrew Strauss has won the toss and England will bat ...he looks pretty pleased with himself. The pitch is dry and brown and there's little doubt Chris Gayle would have done the same had things gone his way. Both captains in blazers looking very smart.

Dale Richards has failed a late fitness test so Devon Smith opens with Gayle.

England 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Andrew Flintoff, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Ryan Sidebottom, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 Monty Panesar.

West Indies 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Devon Smith, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Xavier Marshall, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Brendan Nash, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Jerome Taylor, 9 Daren Powell, 10 Suleiman Benn, 11 Fidel Edwards.

Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh plundered centuries to lead India to a crushing 147-run win over Sri Lanka in the third one-day international and an unbeatable 3-0 series lead on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan equalled the world record for one-day wickets but could not stop India piling up a massive total of 363 for five before Sri Lanka were dismissed for 216.
Sehwag and Yuvraj rescued the visitors after they had slumped to 24 for two.
Man-of-the-match Yuvraj was dismissed for 117 when he cut Muralitharan to Chamara Kapugedera at point, giving the off-spinner his 502nd one-day wicket to equal the world record held by Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram.
The 36-year-old Muralitharan, playing his 327th one-day international, also holds the world record for most test wickets.
Left-hander Yuvraj slammed 15 fours and one six and Sehwag struck 17 fours in his 116 off 89 balls.
The pair shared a 221-run third-wicket stand, taking full advantage of wayward bowling and poor fielding after Sachin Tendulkar had fallen for seven and Gautam Gambhir for 10.
Opener Sehwag, dropped off his own bowling by Sanath Jayasuriya on 72, was eventually run out by the same player after a direct hit from mid-off.
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan shared a breezy unbroken stand of 85 in 64 balls for the sixth wicket, Pathan cracking a career-best 59 not out off 38 deliveries and Dhoni compiling an unbeaten 35.
Sri Lanka made a bad start by losing Jayasuriya for a duck and only Kumar Sangakkara's gutsy 83 off 82 balls kept them in the hunt.
Sangakkara's dismissal left Sri Lanka on 189 for seven and Indian left-arm spinner Praghyan Ojha completed career-best figures of four for 38 runs.
The fourth one-dayer in the five-match series will be played on Thursday.

After two low-scoring games in Dambulla, the teams move to three straight day-night
contests at the Premadasa, and the statistics suggest what happens in the rest of the
series could lie in the starts given by the top-order batsmen. In 60 day-night games,
Nos 1-3 average 35.78 per wicket, that figure falling to 29.84 for the next three in the
line-up. With the advent of Powerplays teams pack their top order with their most
instinctive - and destructive - stroke players. Unlike India, who have major injury woes
and are searching for rhythm, Sri Lanka are settled, with Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara
in their top three.

Yuvraj Singh has been cleared of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct by the match referee Chris Broad at a hearing after the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Yuvraj had been charged under Level 1.3 of the code, which refers to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”. He had been adjudged lbw off Nuwan Kulasekara when on 66; the ball was going on to hit the stumps but Yuvraj had got a big inside edge onto the pads which the umpire had failed to spot. He waited at the crease for a few seconds on receiving the decision, before trudging of

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE : KNOW ABOUT INDIAN CRICKET !! < for live matches CLICK HERE >

The Indian cricket team is the national cricket team of India. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the richest cricket board in the world,[1] it is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test and One Day International status.

Though cricket was introduced to India by European merchant sailors in the 18th-century and the first cricket club in India was established in Calcutta in 1792, India's national cricket team didn't play their first Test match until 25 June 1932 at Lord's.[2] They became the sixth team to be granted Test cricket status.[3] As of October 21, 2008, the Indian team has played 423 Test matches, winning 22.69%, losing 32.15% and drawing 44.91% of its games, with also 1 tied match (0.24%).[4] India has a relatively better record in One Day Internationals, winning over 50% of matches played. The team is currently ranked by the ICC third in Test cricket and third in One Day Internationals.[5] As of October 2008, Mahendra Singh Dhoni serves as the captain of the Indian cricket team in all forms of the game.[6]

Traditionally much stronger at home than abroad, India proved weaker than Australia and England, winning only 35 of the 196 test matches they played in their first fifty years.[7] The team, however, gained strength near the end of the 1970s with the emergence of players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and the Indian spin quartet. The Indian team has continued to be highly ranked since then in Test and limited overs cricket. It won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and was runners-up in 2003. It also won the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007. The current team contains many of the world's leading players, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, who hold numerous cricketing world records.

INDIAN TEAM COLOUR:

When playing one-day cricket, the Indian cricket team has in recent years worn a sky blue shirt and pants. At present, the shirt also contains vertical band on the right side with a orange and white colors and the name of their main sponsor, Sahara. The one-day cap is also sky blue with the BCCI logo on the front. The name of the player is printed in yellow at the back.

With the advent of the World Series Cup in the 1970s, each team was to don a primary and secondary colour on their uniforms. The Indian team elected to wear light-blue as their primary colour and yellow as their secondary colour. Even during the 1999 Cricket World Cup the secondary colour on the Indian cricket team's clothing has been yellow. However, this has since been removed and replaced with the tricolour. However, in the past the Indian ODI outfits were changed to different shades of blue, mostly darker than the current, and the team donned dark blue during 1992, the current sky blue colour is more similar to that worn in the World Series Cup.

When playing first-class cricket, in addition to their cricket whites, Indian fielders sometimes wear a sunhat, which is dark blue and has a wide brim, with the BCCI logo in the middle of the front of the hat. Helmets are coloured similarly. Some players sport the Indian flag on their helmet. The current kit sponsor for the Indian team is Nike, Inc.

NATIONAL AWARDS:

Sachin Tendulkar, who began playing for India as a 16-year-old in 1989 and has since become the most prolific run-scorer in the history of both Test and ODI cricket, is easily the batsman with the most national achievements. He holds the record of most appearances in both Tests and ODIs, most runs in both Tests and ODIs and most centuries in Tests and ODIs. The highest score by an Indian is the 319 scored by Virender Sehwag in Chennai. It is the second triple century in Test cricket by an Indian, the first being a 309 also made by Sehwag although against Pakistan. The team's highest ever score was a 705/7 against Australia in Sydney, 2004, while its lowest was 42 against England in 1974. In ODIs, the team's highest is 413/5 against Bermuda in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. In the same match, India set a world record of the highest winning margin of 257 runs in an ODI match.

India also has had some very strong bowling figures, with spin bowler Anil Kumble being a member of the elite group of 3 bowlers who have taken 600 Test wickets. In 1999, Anil Kumble emulated Jim Laker to become the second bowler to take all ten wickets in a Test match innings when he took 10 wickets for 74 runs against Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

Many of the Indian cricket team's records are also world records, for example Sachin Tendulkar's century tally (in Tests and ODIs) and run tally (also in both Tests and ODIs). Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 183 not out against Sri Lanka in 2005 is the world record score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs. The Indian cricket team also holds the record sequence of 17 successful run-chases in ODIs,[32] which ended in a dramatic match against the West Indies in May 2006, which India lost by just 1 run.
